The First Amendment forms the cornerstone of rights for all Americans. It should inspire passion and appreciation in students as they move from adolescence to adulthood. Hands-on activities are one of the most memorable methods for imparting that appreciation and creating an impression that will last a lifetime.
The activities suggested here allow students to interact with others and draw upon the diversity of thought, beliefs, and experience of their peers. "Doing" in conjunction with classroom lecture and reading will create the optimum learning scenario and bring alive those powerful 45 words penned well over two centuries ago.
